Born in New York City, but raised in Nashville, TN, Urmy's journey in life has been as inspiring as it is unique. Through all the years he's spent honing his songwriting skills, he has also studied indigenous healing techniques with the Maori people of New Zealand, earned a masters of fine arts in poetry, and worked odd-jobs such as in a hospital where he transported corpses from their rooms to the morgue. These experiences have presented Urmy the opportunity to write from a broad range of perspectives, and collaborate with some of the artists that are his heroes like, Mary Gauthier, John Prine, and "Cowboy" Jack Clement.

His deepest influences are rooted in the poet-lyricist and storytelling traditions, and his musical inspirations are drawn from genres as widely ranging as country, blues, pop, and hip hop. Some of Urmy's biggest songwriting influences have been: Skip James, John Prine, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Adam Duritz, among many others.

In 2007, Finishing Line Press published Matt's first collection of poems, Ghosts In A House, and in 2015 Iris Press published his second collection, The Rain In the Bell. He is also an entrepreneur, and the co-founder of, Artist Growth, an artist management software platform utilized by some of the largest management companies and record labels in the music industry, as well independent artists and managers, and has served as the company's CEO since 2012.
